The Deep Dark Woods Announce Jubilee

Leave your map and lose your bearings in the swirling sonic forest of The Deep Dark Woods. The band returns from the wilderness with Jubilee, a celebration of community, camaraderie and feverish cabin creativity. With Jubilee, The Deep Dark Woods revel in the jangly, freewheeling days of psychedelic and electric folk while keeping their compass aligned with the magnetic, hypnotic north.

Made in a cabin in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains near Bragg Creek, Alberta, Jubilee journeys through folk and rock history, from California to the UK, from the 1970s to the present day. The album nods to genre pioneers such as The Byrds and Fairport Convention before heading into altogether new territory of soundscapes that bend and fluctuate underfoot. Jubilee moves the yardstick with its rolling layers of specialized keys, organs and analog rarities (e.g., novachord, celesta, vibraphone, and more) first used in the early days of psychedelic synth experimentation, and the results sound at once in and out of modern time. Jubilee was produced by Laurel Canyon-based folk revivalist Jonathan Wilson.

The Deep Dark Woods are Ryan Boldt, Chris Mason, Lucas Goetz, Geoff Hilhorst and newcomer Clayton Linthicum.

The album will be out on Six Shooter in Canada and
Sugar Hill Records in US and beyond.

Terrapin Crossroads, CFMA’s, Burke’s departure, Winter break.

Well we just finished up our last tour of the year in San Rafael at Terrapin Crossroads, where we had the esteemed pleasure of playing at the grand reopening of the Grate Room opening for Greenur (Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Jackie Greene, Jeff Chimenti & Joe Russo) and got to play a few songs with Phil Lesh.  Needless to say, a bang-up finish to an exciting year of shows.

We were recently awarded Contemporary Album of the Year for The Place I Left Behind at the 2012 Canadian Folk Music Awards in Saint John, NB.  We are honoured to be recognized with this award, and would like to thank our engineer for the album, Darren Van Niekirk, without whom, the album would not sound as good as it does.

Tonight we play our hometown show for the year at Amigos in Saskatoon, which marks not only the last show of 2012 for us, but also our last show with long-time guitarist and founding member Burke Barlow, who has decided to resign to pursue other ventures.  We are sad to see our dear friend go, but wish him the very best in the next chapter of his life.

The band will be laying low for the majority of the winter, but we will be getting back on the road in the spring.  Thanks everyone for a great year, see you in 2013!
